This blog has now been online for more than
5 years, but to be honest it isn’t really a blog at all. When I set this up, I simply wanted to find a
place to publish a series of photos which would illustrate various plastic and
metal ranges side by side. The images
were not intended to be “followed” as they went up; instead I visualized this
as a static resource where hobbyists could look up comparisons as they needed
them.

Over time though, a few other things crept
into the blog. For instance, I had some
lists of manufacturers that I had created for my own use, but I thought they might
be helpful to others, so I published them using the “pages” tool. I also posted “news” items from time to time
when metal manufacturers announced new ranges or other changes.

I have now discovered the drawback in
publishing these other items, especially the pages: readers do not realize that
they are not current. And this can make
them less than helpful.

At this time, I have no desire to maintain
a current description of the manufacturing landscape for 20-25mm metal
soldiers. There are many other places
where that information is published and is kept up to date. In particular, Uwe Wild’s blog History in 1/72 does a great job of staying on top of the new and smaller manufacturers. I will keep links on this page to Uwe’s blogs
and the other core resources for understanding the sector.

As for this blog, I will shortly be taking
down the out-of-date pages, removing the old “news” items, and deleting the
blog roll. This will remain simply a
storage place for comparison pictures, which will be expanded from time to
time. I hope others find those photos useful in assembling their armies. I know I will continue reading the many other
blogs out there dedicated to modeling and gaming with them.

The Minifigs S Series dates from the late 1960s, when they started to supplement and then replace the original 20mm Minifigs.

According to Vintage20Mil, the S Series is widely seen as the first “true 25mm” range (even though the firm described them as being 20mm in their initial release material). The range covered a wide range of conflicts, and featured a variety of poses that surpassed many contemporary competitors.

The period of S Series ascendency was brief. In the mid-1970s, Minifigs moved to a new style, featuring sculpts that were slightly taller and significantly bulkier than the S Series. As part of this transition, the S Series figures were pulled out of production.

But now many of those S Series lines are being made available as a recast range through John Cunningham’s operation: 20mm Nostalgia. John has already acquired the rights and is working for new moulds for all or part of the following lines: Marlburian; Jacobites; Seven Years’ War; American War of Independence; French Revolution and Egyptian Campaign; Crimean War; Franco-Prussian War. Below are some details on the two latter lines.

Franco-Prussian German (includes Prussia, Saxony, Bavaria, Wurttemberg, Silesia): 10 infantry poses, 2 artillery poses, 5 cavalry poses, 1 mounted general.
Franco-Prussian French: 8 infantry poses, 2 artillery poses, 3 cavalry poses, 1 mounted general.
Crimean British: 18 infantry poses, 7 artillery poses, 5 cavalry poses.
Crimean Turkish: 5 infantry poses, 3 artillery poses, 2 cavalry poses.
Crimean French: 12 infantry poses, 3 artillery poses, 2 cavalry poses.
Crimean Sardinian: 3 infantry poses.
Crimean Russian: 12 infantry poses, 6 artillery poses, 5 cavalry poses.

The picture above shows some sample figures from the Franco-Prussian War range, with catalogue descriptions as follows:

PFP 7 Wurttemberg Line Infantry advance
PFP 10 Wurttemberg Line Gunner firing gun
PFP 11 Wurttemberg Line Gunner carrying shell
FFP 3 French Guard Grenadier a Pied advance
As mentioned here and elsewhere, Uwe Wild is a passionate collector of 1/72nd scale figures. Uwe is particularly interested in creating massive dioramas with teams of colleagues. You can read about his work and exploits on his blog:

http://historyin172.blogspot.com/

Over the years, Uwe’s desire to present some of the more obscure units in his work has led him to commission unique figures from a number of sculptors. Uwe then has the figures cast in metal, and uses them in his production. Of course, as soon as other collectors notice the new models, Uwe gets a drove of requests for additional production.

Uwe has now taken the logical next step and established a web shop where his figures can be purchased. The site, which takes the name “Fritz Figures” can be found here:

http://www.fritz-figures.de/

The current offerings include:

Musketeers, 1680s
Arauebusiers de Grassin, War of Austrian Succession (1740s)
Indian troops, Wellington in India
Polish infantry, Napoleonic War
Horsemen from the Sokoto Caliphate (West Africa), 19th century
Ottoman army (Turkish and Egyptian), Crimean War
Bengal lancers, 2nd Afghan War
Anamites, 1880-1900

Foot figures are selling for €0.80 while mounted figures are €1.60.
Atlantic first produced these figures in the 1970s and they have been out of business for a long time. It is not clear whether Nexus remains in business, but their figures can be found at specialized retailers.
The Atlantic figures were generously donated by Liam Sullivan.
Lancer Miniatures seems to be a new undertaking with a couple of interesting metal ranges. As far as I can tell the firm just started producing this year. The company is based in the UK, and the website is here:

In terms of figures, Lancer has two ranges: one covering the Seven Years War, and the other dealing with the Great War.

The Seven Years War range currently comprises 6 British foot poses, and 31 French poses (both foot and mounted). There is also a tab for Hanoverian figures, but it is currently empty. The image above comes from the website and shows the following French SYW miniature:

SYWF18 “Mounted Staff officer holding hat and giving orders.”

As for the First World War, Lancer offers almost 100 different figures, covering British, French, German and Portuguese armies on the Western Front.

Foot figures are sold for £0.60 each, while mounted figures while mounted troops go for £1.30. There are also some discount offers available in both ranges.

Beside the figures, Lancer also sells buildings and First World War vehicles in 20mm scale.
