Kennington and SHQ 20mm vs Airfix 1/72, Napoleonic mounted



The photo above compares two metal figures from SHQ and Kennington (A,C) with a pair of plastic troopers from Airfix (B,D). Click on the image to see a larger version.

THE METAL FIGURES

Manufacturer’s Designation and Number of Poses:

The metal figures are sold by both SHQ and Kennington, and are catalogued as BRC 2 “Napoleonic British Heavy Dragoons, Command.” The Napoleonic range from these two firms is quite extensive, and includes all the major participants.

Figure Characteristics:

Rider Height above ground (measured to rider eyes): 33mm.
Rider Height above ground (measured to top of head): 35mm.

Availability and Cost:

The metal figures can be purchased directly from the two manufacturers. The cavalry featured here sell for €5.50 at MBM Models (Kennington) or £4.50 through SHQ. For that price, you get 3 horses with 3 riders (2 officers and one trumpeter).

THE PLASTIC FIGURES

Manufacturers’ Designation and Number of Poses:


Figure B comes from Airfix box 01736 “Waterloo French Cavalry (Cuirassiers).” The set was also reissued by Accurate as box 7212 “Waterloo French Cavalry.” The set includes 9 riders in 6 poses, mounted on 9 horses in two poses. There are also two vignettes: a man holding his horse, and a crouching trooper beside an injured horse.

Figure D comes from Airfix box 01743 “Waterloo British Cavalry (Hussars).” The set was also reissued by Accurate as box 7210 “Waterloo British Cavalry.” The set includes11 riders, each in a unique pose, mounted on 11 horses in 3 poses. There is also a vignette of a crouching trooper beside an injured horse.

Figure Characteristics:

French Rider Height above ground (measured to eyes): 30mm.
French Rider Height above ground (measured to top of head): 32mm.
British Rider Height above ground (measured to eyes): 33mm.
British Rider Height above ground (measured to top of head): 35mm.

Availability and Cost:

Although these figures are not currently in production, they can easily be obtained from dealers.

The one thing I never noticed as a young kid when i played with my Airfix napoleonics was the loss of all the scabbards from the curaiseur figures. As I have now matured the missing detail is quite evident. This of course didn't stop me recollecting a set many years later.

My disappointment at the time, was how tiny the cuirassiers seemed beside the British hussars. Thanks for commenting.
