Zvezda 1/72 Viking vs Garrison 25mm Saxon, foot

THE METAL FIGURE

Manufacturer’s Designation and Number of Poses:


The metal figure is from Garrison Wargames Figures and comes from their 25mm Medieval range. Garrison uses the code “HS 10” to describe this figure, which they call “Saxon fyrdman with throwing axe.”

The Medieval range from Garrison includes 12 Saxon poses, 11 Normans, and 14 Vikings (2 of them mounted).

Figure Characteristics:

Height (measured from sole of foot to eyes): 23mm.
Height (measured from sole of foot to top of head): 26mm.

The Zvezda figure comes from box 8046 “Vikings, IX to XI century.” The box contains 41 figures in 11 poses.

Figure Characteristics:

Height (measured from sole of foot to eyes): 21mm.
Height (measured from sole of foot to top of head): 23mm.

Availability and Cost:

Zvezda released this set in 2007. It is currently available and can be found through various online and local hobby shops and distributors.

Notes on the Samples:

The sample figure was donated by Liam Sullivan.

Availability and Cost:

The Orion box is currently available, although it is not widely carried. However, it can be found through various online and local hobby shops and distributors.

The figures were obtained in a trade with Frank Ivansic and a donation from Liam Sullivan.

The plastic figures come from set 6006 “Saxons.” HaT experimented with a reduced size set when this was released, so the box contains just 24 figures in 4 poses. They are part of a substantial commitment to the early middle age on the part of HaT.

Figure Characteristics:

Height (measured from sole of foot to eyes): 21mm.
Height (measured from sole of foot to top of head): 22mm.

Availability:

Although this is one of the earlier releases from HaT, figures and boxes can still be found at hobby shops and online retailers.

The Revell figures come from box 02551 “Anglo-Saxons, 1066.” This box includes 40 foot figures in 15 poses, along with a pair of mounted figures in individual poses. Revell has also made a Norman set for this period.

Figure Characteristics:

Height (measured from sole of foot to eyes): 20mm.
Height (measured from sole of foot to top of head): 22mm.

Availability and Cost:

According to PSR, this set was first released in 1989. It is currently in production at Revell, and can be found online and at local hobby shops.

The plastic figures come from two of Strelets’ mini-sets M001 “Normans” and M002 “Norman Archers.” Strelets introduced the mini-sets as a way to bring more subjects forward without the expense of producing 48 individual sculpts. Each of these sets includes 48 figures, but comprised of 4 copies of 12 poses.

Strelets has released a large range of sets covering the Dark Ages and early Medieval Europe.

Figure Characteristics:

M001 Height (measured from ground to eyes): 21mm.
M002 Height (measured from ground to eyes): 21mm.
M001 Height (measured from ground to top of head): 23mm.
M002 Height (measured from ground to top of head): 23mm.

Availability and Cost:

These sets were introduced in 2006, and are easily found in online and physical stores.

Irregular vs MiniArt, Medieval Foot

The Irregular models come from two of their ranges: “Wars of the Roses” and “Medieval Scots.” They are catalogued as follows (left to right in the picture):

NLM 15 Highland Heavy Infantry (Medieval Scots)
NLM 1 Longbowman (Wars of the Roses)

Irregular’s metal figures are currently available. They can be ordered directly from the manufacturer. The figures can be ordered individually, and come with random variations. Cost: 50p UK per figure.

The MiniArt figures come from two boxes. The figures on the left are from 72008 “Italian Knights XV Century” while those on the right can be found in box 72011 ”German Knights XV Century” The former box contains 48 foot figures in 12 poses, while the latter contains 20 foot figures in 5 poses, plus 16 mounted figures in 4 poses.

Box 72008: 22mm.
Box 72011: 21mm.

Body Build (from 5 categories): C (Average)

Availability and Cost:

Both boxes are shown as currently available on MiniArt’s website. They can be purchased from hobby shops and distributors. For example, DragonUSA Online has box 72011 currently available at $8.95 USD.

Irregular vs Zvezda, Medieval Foot

The plastic figures come from two Zvezda boxes. The two figures on the left are from box 8001 "Russian Knights.” The other two figures can be found in box 8016 “Livonian Knights.”

The Irregular models come from two of their ranges: “Wars of the Roses” and Medieval Scots.” They are catalogued as follows (left to right in the picture):
