The RedBox figures come from box RB 72003 “Colonial British Army 1890.” The box contains 48 figures in 12 poses (4 copies of the same sprue). RedBox has also released several other sets covering colonial subjects, including a very deep range devoted to the Boxer Rebellion.

Availability and Cost:

This was one of the first sets to be released by RedBox, appearing in 2006. These figures are currently available at hobby shops and online dealers.

THE PLASTIC FIGURES

Manufacturer’s Designation and Number of Poses:

The British Esci figure comes from box 212 “Zulu War, British Infantry Soldiers” and was also issued in box 232 “Indian War Kiber Pass British Infantry.”

Box 212 included 50 figures in 15 poses. The set was later re-released by Italeri as box 6050, “British Infantry, Zulu Wars, 1879.” The Italeri version of the set included only 40 figures.

Box 232 added three new poses, bringing the total to 18, while keeping the number of figures steady at 50.

The Zulu figures were released in box 213 “Zulu War, Zulu Warriors.” It was also released by Italeri as set 6051, titled “Zulu Warriors, Zulu Wars, 1879.” Both versions included 48 figures in 12 poses.

Availability and Cost:

The figure on the left was featured in box 8208 “Hadendowa Camelry.” The box includes 3 foot figures in this pose, along with 12 camel riders in 3 poses, and 12 camels in 2 poses. The foot figure comes with a separate arm that can be positioned at any angle, and the riders have a choice of weaponry.

The other HaT figures come from box 8023 “Colonial Indian Infantry” which includes 48 figures in 8 poses.

HaT has committed to building a wide range of figures for colonial conflicts; they have a number of interesting sets which are under development, or have been recently released.

Garrison discontinuing 25mm Assyrians, English Civil War and American Civil War

Rob Young at Garrison is letting his customers know that he will probably be ending the production of 25mm Assyrians in his Ancient range, as well as all 25mm English Civil War and American Civil War figures. These figures have not been selling strongly, and keeping them in production distracts his attention from those that are in demand.

The Assyrian offerings include 12 foot and 5 mounted poses. In the ACW range, there are 4 guns, over 35 foot poses, including artillery crews, and a couple of mounted figures. For ECW fans, the range includes 20 foot poses and 9 mounted.

The picture above is taken from the Garrison catalogue, and shows CCW2 “Confederate infantry advancing at high porte.” The figure comes from the threatened 25mm ACW line, and retails for £.80. It can also be purchased in a group of 10 for £7.50.

The plastic figures come from two of Strelets’ mini-sets M001 “Normans” and M002 “Norman Archers.” Strelets introduced the mini-sets as a way to bring more subjects forward without the expense of producing 48 individual sculpts. Each of these sets includes 48 figures, but comprised of 4 copies of 12 poses.

Strelets has released a large range of sets covering the Dark Ages and early Medieval Europe.

The Emhar models are from box EM 7203 “German WWI Infantry with Tank Crew.” The box contains 48 figures in 12 poses. Emhar has invested in bringing a varied line of First World War sets to market, including model tanks as well as figures.

25mm Rose Prestige and Garrison Comparisons

Rose and Garrison samples received

Rob Young from Garrison Wargames Figures was kind enough to send a group of samples over recently. Garrison produces figures that were originally designed by John Braithwaite, and released by Garrison, Greenwood & Ball, and Rose. These samples will be featured in a number of upcoming comparisons, but I wanted to provide these shots as an illustration of the ranges represented.

The top picture includes figures from the two 20mm lines. Those grouped to the left are from the Garrison/Greenwood & Ball 20mm range, while the more modern subjects on the right come from the Rose 20mm line.

The bottom photo deals with the 25mm line. Again the figures grouped to the left include 25mm Garrison figures, while the two on the right are from the Rose Prestige range.

More detailed identification of the actual poses supplied will be included in the comparison posts.

Rob sells the 20mm Garrison figures for £0.60 each, while the Rose figures go for just £0.50. At 25mm, the Garrison figures are sold for £0.60, while the Rose Prestige figures cost £0.70.

THE METAL FIGURES

Manufacturer’s Designation and Number of Poses:

I believe that the metal figures come from Garrison’s “20mm Ancients” range, and were previously produced under the Greenwood & Ball name. Within the Ancients range, Garrison currently offers 23 different poses for 1st Century Imperial Romans. However, the poses shown in this image do not seem to be currently in production.

Figure Characteristics:

Height (measured from sole of foot to eyes): 21mm.

Availability and Cost:

As mentioned, these figures are not available from the manufacturer at the present time. However, other Roman figures are in production, and can be purchased from Garrison directly. Foot figures are sold for £0.60 each, while mounted figures cost £1.50

THE PLASTIC FIGURES

Manufacturer’s Designation and Number of Poses:

The plastic figures were originally released by Esci as set 225“Romanic Wars, Barbarian Warriors.” The box included 46 figures in 13 poses.

The set was reissued by Italeri as set 6048, “Barbarian Warriors, 1st to 2nd Century AD.”

Figure Characteristics:

Height (measured from sole of foot to eyes): 21mm.

Availability and Cost:

Esci has gone out of business, and Italeri is not currently producing these figures, however, they can be readily obtained through second hand dealers and auctions.

Notes on the Samples:

The sample figures were obtained in a trade with Frank Ivansic.

25mm Garrison Assyrians back in production

Rob Young from Garrison Wargames Figures continues on his quest to rescue and re-release the complete Garrison range. The latest additions comprise a number of Assyrian figures for the 25mm Ancient range.

Originally designed by John Brathwaite, the new figures include 12 foot and 5 mounted poses. Garrison is selling the foot figures for £0.70, while the mounted warriors sell for £1.60.
